Oak Performance & Wellness FAQ: Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Started
Starting a new fitness program can feel overwhelming, especially if you've had past injuries, haven't exercised in a while, or aren't sure what type of training is right for you. At Oak Performance & Wellness, we believe that asking questions is an important part of the process. In fact, we encourage it.
If you've been wondering what makes Oak different, how our semi-private training works, or whether you'll fit in here, you're not alone. These are some of the most common questions we hear from prospective members.
Is Oak group fitness?
No.
While our members train alongside others, Oak is not a traditional group fitness gym where everyone performs the same workout.
At Oak Performance & Wellness, we specialize in semi-private personal training. Each member follows a personalized training program designed specifically for their goals, fitness level, movement limitations, and training history. This means that even if five people are training during the same session, each person may be performing different exercises and working toward different goals.
The result is a more individualized experience without the cost of traditional one-on-one personal training.
What is semi-private personal training?
Semi-private personal training combines the best aspects of personal training and small group training.
You receive individualized programming, professional coaching, accountability, and support while training in a motivating community environment. Our coaches are able to provide personalized attention throughout every session while helping members build relationships with others pursuing similar goals.
Many people find this model provides the perfect balance between individualized coaching and the energy that comes from training alongside others.
Do I need to be in shape before joining?
Absolutely not.
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that they need to "get in shape" before working with a coach. The truth is that many of our members join because they haven't found success exercising on their own.
Some members come to us after years away from exercise. Others are managing previous injuries, chronic aches and pains, mobility limitations, or simply a lack of confidence in the gym.
Our job is to meet you where you are and help you move forward safely and effectively.
What happens during my first visit?
Most gyms start with a workout.
We don't.
Every new member begins with a comprehensive consultation and movement assessment. During your first visit, we'll discuss your goals, exercise history, previous injuries, lifestyle, and any challenges you've experienced in the past.
From there, you'll complete our 17-point movement assessment using Demotu technology. This assessment allows us to evaluate mobility, balance, stability, movement quality, and other factors that may impact your progress.
Once the assessment is complete, we'll review the results together, explain what we found, and discuss the best path forward.
There is no workout, no sweating, and no pressure. The goal is simply to understand your body so we can build the right plan.
How many people train at once?
Our semi-private sessions are intentionally kept small at roughly 6 people per group time.
This allows our coaches to provide individualized instruction, make exercise modifications when needed, and ensure every member receives the attention they deserve.
Small sessions also help create the supportive community environment that Oak is known for. Our members often develop friendships that extend beyond the gym through coffee meetups, workshops, social events, and other community activities.
How do you track progress?
Progress is about much more than the number on a scale.
At Oak, we reassess members every five weeks using our movement assessment process. This allows us to measure meaningful improvements in mobility, balance, movement quality, strength, and overall function.
By reassessing regularly, we can identify what's working, adjust programming when necessary, and ensure that each member continues progressing toward their goals.
Rather than guessing, we rely on objective data and measurable outcomes.
